When a borrower with a reverse mortgage dies, the loan usually must be repaid or the home turned in. A co-borrower can remain in the home and continue drawing funds. For loans with FHA case numbers after August 4, 2014, a nonborrowing spouse may stay without repaying the loan if married at closing, remained married until death, and was named on the loan. The spouse must maintain property taxes and insurance.
